Materials & Performance
At FRST, we believe honesty beats greenwashing every time. Every textile carries an environmental footprint, and true responsibility starts with transparency about why we choose our materials.
When you are out on exposed trails, paddling, running, or training through intense heat and humidity, your gear needs to perform without failing. Here is the science behind our fabrics, our durability standards, and where we are heading.
1. Engineered for Heat: The Science of Thermoregulation
In hot and humid climates, your body relies heavily on evaporative cooling to shed excess heat and regulate core temperature. The choice of fabric directly dictates how efficiently that process works.
Hydrophobic Fibre Advantage
Natural fibres like cotton are hydrophilic (water-loving). Cotton can absorb up to 25 times its weight in moisture, holding damp, heavy sweat directly against your skin. Technical polyester is hydrophobic, absorbing less than 1% of its weight in liquid.
Active Evaporative Cooling
Micro-grooves in our technical knit pull sweat away from your skin through capillary action, rapidly dispersing it across the outer surface of the fabric. This allows moving air to evaporate moisture quickly, cooling your skin efficiently.
Featherweight and Anti-Chafe
Because the fabric releases sweat rather than storing water weight, it stays lightweight, breathable, and friction-free across long training sessions and hot outdoor days.
2. Durability Is the Ultimate Eco-Strategy
Fast fashion has created a culture of disposability. We build gear designed to last through hundreds of outings, not a single season.
Virgin Fibre Integrity
While mechanically recycled polyester (rPET from plastic bottles) sounds appealing, mechanical shredding breaks molecular polymer chains into shorter staple fibres. This often compromises tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and UV longevity. If a recycled piece of activewear pills, bags out, or tears after a few months, its replacement doubles its environmental footprint.
Uncompromised Tensile Strength
We choose technical virgin polyester for its unbroken molecular chains, exceptional tear resistance, and shape retention under heavy pack friction, salt, sweat, and harsh sun.
The Longevity Standard
The most sustainable piece of outdoor equipment is the one that stays on your back for years, not in a landfill.
3. The Whole Lifecycle: Water and In-Use Energy
Evaluating an environmental footprint requires looking beyond the raw material stage to the entire lifespan of the product.
Zero Agricultural Water Drain
Unlike conventional cotton—which requires intensive agricultural land clearing, high chemical pesticide use, and up to 2,700 to 10,000 litres of water per kilogram—polyester requires zero farming land and zero agricultural pesticides.
Zero-Heat Drying
Laundering and drying account for a major portion of any garment's lifetime carbon footprint. Technical polyester line-dries naturally in minutes on a rack, eliminating the need for high-energy tumble dryers.
4. Where We’re Heading: Our Circular Roadmap
We are an independent, growing brand. We don’t claim to be a 100% circular business today, but we believe in being open about where we are investing our future energy as we scale.
1. Closed-Loop Take-Back Scheme (In Development)
Pure, unblended polyester has a distinct advantage: unlike mixed-blend fabrics (such as poly-cotton, which are almost impossible to separate), single-material polyester is technically recyclable. As our production volume grows, we are actively laying the groundwork to introduce an end-of-life take-back program to channel worn-out gear directly into specialized circular textile-to-textile recycling streams.
2. Meaningful Habitat Restoration
Rather than using generic, one-click tree widgets with unverified survival rates, our goal is to partner with vetted native regeneration projects that protect the trails, coastlines, and bushland where we all love to spend our time.
How to Care for Your Gear
You control the biggest portion of your gear's lifetime footprint. Keep it performing longer with three simple steps:
- Wash Cold and Gentle: Protects fabric elasticity and eliminates the energy needed for water heating.
- Always Line Dry: Hang it outside or on a drying rack. It dries naturally in minutes.
- Wash Only When Needed: An airy hang-dry between light sessions extends garment lifespan and conserves water.
